Warehouse Management System (WMS)
What a WMS controls, where its boundary with the ERP runs, and why master data quality decides whether the implementation pays off.

A warehouse management system (WMS) is software that directs and records the movement and storage of goods inside a warehouse – receiving, putaway, replenishment of pick faces, picking, packing and dispatch. It holds the authoritative record of what sits in which location, in what quantity and in what condition, and issues the tasks to staff and equipment that keep that record true.
The boundary with the ERP is what defines a WMS. An ERP owns orders, valuation and stock at plant or warehouse level; a WMS owns stock at bin and handling‑unit level and the sequence of physical work that changes it. That resolution is what makes directed putaway, FEFO or FIFO enforcement, cycle counting without a shutdown and a full audit trail per pallet possible – none of which an ERP inventory module delivers on its own.
- Inbound – receiving against the purchase order, quality holds, cross‑docking, directed putaway by location rules
- Storage – bin‑level locations, slotting, replenishment of pick faces, cycle counting
- Outbound – wave or order‑based picking, batch and multi‑order picking, packing, load consolidation and dispatch
- Resources – labour and equipment task allocation, performance data per operator and zone
WMS implementations fail on inputs, rarely on the software. Wrong item dimensions and weights make slotting and load building meaningless; a location layout that does not match the physical warehouse produces routes nobody follows; and an interface to the ERP that is not specified down to the message level leaves stock reconciled by hand. The system that fits an operation also depends on how it is run: a manual warehouse with a few thousand SKUs needs different functionality than an automated site where the WMS has to coordinate with a warehouse control system driving conveyors and cranes.
WMS in practice
