Data led warehouse layout for dm drogerie markt

Logio helped dm drogerie markt turn detailed retail data into a warehouse layout and technology concept for its new Ostredek distribution center. The solution reduces labor effort through optimised processes and precise product slotting while keeping the layout ready for future changes in demand.

Outcome

Using detailed product and retail data, Logio analysed assortment characteristics and store layout, then proposed and compared several warehouse variants with suitable technologies. dm drogerie markt gained a clear, future proof layout with defined processes and slotting rules that support efficient operations and lower labor costs.

Initial challenge

dm drogerie markt decided to build a new strategically located warehouse in Ostředek in the Czech Republic and needed a layout concept that would reflect the specifics of its drugstore assortment, product handling requirements and in‑store layout, while supporting efficient operations.

Project goal

The goal was to use the large volume of available retail and product data to analyse item characteristics and flows, design and compare multiple warehouse layout variants with suitable technologies, and select a solution that minimises labour intensity and remains flexible for future needs.

Solution

Designing a warehouse layout powered by retail data

Logio transformed detailed data about dm’s products and store layout into a concrete warehouse layout concept, including technology recommendations and clear rules for placing product groups and individual SKUs.

01

Data analysis of assortment and flows

Logio analysed available data on products, including their turnover, weight, storage, handling and transport requirements, as well as how goods are arranged in stores. This created a fact based picture of real flows and constraints.

02

Design of layout variants

Based on the data, Logio designed several warehouse layout variants that respected product groups, SKU characteristics and the relationship between warehouse zones and store presentation.

03

Technology and process concept

For each layout variant, Logio proposed suitable warehouse technologies and associated processes that minimise manual work and support efficient handling of different product types.

04

Joint evaluation and selection

Logio prepared a comparison of the layout and technology options so that dm drogerie markt could jointly select a solution that meets current needs and can be adapted to future changes in turnover or other key parameters.

Impact

Data based layout that cuts labor and prepares the warehouse for growth

Lower warehouse labor costs

The proposed layout, technology concept and process design reduce manual work by aligning handling steps and slotting rules with product characteristics and flows.

Clear rules for every pallet position

Each pallet location has a defined SKU assignment and rules for how layout and processes should change when turnover or other decisive parameters change.

Future proof warehouse concept

Evaluated layout variants and technology options give dm drogerie markt a solution that meets current capacity needs and can be adapted when business requirements evolve.

Better link between warehouse and stores

The warehouse layout reflects how goods are arranged in stores, which supports efficient replenishment and consistent grouping of products across the network.
